What kind of material socks do you like?
Cotton, acrylic, wool, nylon, rice paper, bamboo grass...
a variety of materials have been used in socks depending
on the lifestyle. In order for you to enjoy socks for its materials,
let's take a look at each material's characteristics.
Aren't you thinking that wool socks are winter clothes?
Certainly not.
Wool is an all-purpose material that can be used all year long.
Here we have cross section drawings of wool, cotton, and polyester fibers.
How does each fiber's hygroscopic property differ?
| wool absorb moisture inside fiber |
cotton absorb moisture in whole fiber |
polyester not absorb moisture |

| Since wool absorbs moisture in the inside of the fiber, the surface does not get wet and remains comfortably dry. Moisture absorbing power is 1.8 times cotton, and 40 times more than polyester. | Cotton is different from wool since the whole fiber absorbs moisture, so it becomes sticky after absorbing a certain amount of moisture. | Polyester repels moisture with its surface, and since it does not have a function that stores moisture inside, its moisture absorbing capabilities are equal to zero. |
Wool has lots of excellent functions besides its hygroscopic property.
For example, if you wear wool fiber clothing it will feel warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
The secret is in the sheep's curly fur. Because of wool's characteristically curly fibers,
it can hold a good amount of air. This air gathers and becomes a layer. Since it allows
it to function as heat insulating material, it feels warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
This is the reason why wool is considered "natural air conditioning."
Again, wool fiber's surface has the characteristic of repelling moisture. Meaning, water soluble dirt does not soak in and is also easy to wash off. It is definitely hard for dust to stick to this clean fiber.
These are only a few examples. Flame resistance, excellent hygroscopicity and heat-retaining capacity... wool is a multifunctional natural fiber.

Between the first two hours you wear shoes, the inside of the shoe becomes hot and humid, as if a tropical forest!
When this happens, the inside of your feet changes to become an optimal environment for microorganisms and they begin to increase.
Foot odor, which we all worry about, is mainly caused by the breeding of these microorganisms. In order to prevent this,
the key point is in air permeable shoes and socks.

That is where wool socks enter the picture.
As long as you are wearing shoes, the environment inside the shoe will not change.
If you want to spend your everyday with comfortable feet, try wool socks for once.
Different from the warmth of wool you felt during the cold winter, you will experience the advantages of wool even in the damp rainy season and sweaty summers, and will stop thinking that wool is just for winter.
Even at Okamoto we focused our attention on this excellent attribute of wool. We developed and use in our products the natural fiber BREATHE FIBER® which retains the original qualities of wool yet makes it so that lint does not come off easily.
